Christmas Special: Guide to Candy Canes
Share
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas! What better way to celebrate than to learn about the beloved Christmas treat - candy canes.
The original candy cane was made in Germany 350 years ago. At first they were just straight, white sugar sticks. As to how they became cane shaped, it is not certain. It is rumoured however, (though there is no strong evidence to support this) that the j-shape of candy canes came from a choirmaster in Cologne Cathedral in the late 17th century. He bent the candy canes in order to symbolize the staff of the Shepherd in the Nativity story.
Over time, candy canes have become synonymous with Christmas and have been used to decorate Christmas trees. The first documented use of Candy canes for Christmas was in 1847, when a German-Swedish immigrant from Ohio decorated his Christmas tree with candy canes.
Solid white candy canes were still on Christmas cards until the early 1900s. The red and white stripes and peppermint flavour were only added in the 20th century.
Did you know that approximately 1.76 billion candy canes are produced every year? So come to our store and buy at least one of those 1.76 billion candy canes. Don’t forget to share this post, comment below and have a very merry Christmas!
