Lollipop Lollipop
Oh Lolli Lolli Lolli
Lollipop *POP* *POP*
As the 50s Chordette’s hit song puts it (see video below), this week’s topic is Lollipops.
The first “lollipop” was a piece of wood with honey, preserved fruit or nuts stuck to it. Then, in the 17th century, street vendors in London started selling a sweet known as the “lolly pop”. In those days lolly meant “tongue” and pop meant “slap”. This “lolly pop” differs from the original lollipop because it had a chewy texture.
The first modern commercial lollipop was created by George Smith in America in 1908. He then trademarked the term “lollipop” in 1931, borrowing the name from a racehorse named “Lolly Pop”. Since then there have been lots of different versions of lollipops such as the Unicorn pop, Drumsticks and more.
You can find these lollipops and a variety of others at our stores in Central and Wan Chai. How great is that? Do you know what else is great? Sharing this post with your friends and family, commenting below on what sweet you want us to do next and checking back regularly to read more posts.
