Guide to Jelly Beans

Guide to Jelly Beans

Jelly beans are supposedly a mash up of different candies. Jelly beans take their hard outer sugar coating from Jordan almonds and take their inner squishy part from Turkish delights.

Their origins are unknown but one common story is that they were invented by William Schraft, a Boston candy maker, around the time of the civil war. At the time, families were  encouraged to send Jelly beans to the Union troops as treats.

Interesting fact: In 1905, the word “jelly bean” was entered into the Webster’s dictionary.

Apparently, former US president, Ronald Reagan, took up jelly-bean-eating as an attempt to quit smoking. In fact, he was such a big fan of jelly beans that for his presidential inauguration in 1981, the Jelly Belly company sent him three and a half tonnes of red, blue and white jelly beans.

In the year 2000, Bertie Bott's Every flavour beans were created. They were inspired by the Harry Potter series and had flavours like dirt, bacon and spinach.

We know you are big fans of jelly beans too, so come to our stores in Central and Wan Chai and pick up some Jelly Beans. We have the classic Jelly beans and for the more adventurous, we even have the bean boozled edition which contains a little more eccentric flavours such as toothpaste and canned dog food.
