Guide to PEZ

PEZ: Perfect. Edible. Nothing begins with a ‘z’ so I’m not going to finish this.

PEZ was invented by Eduard Haas III, in Vienna, Austria. The name PEZ originates from the German word for peppermint, “pfeffermintz” by taking the letters ‘p’, ‘e’ and ‘z’.

In 1948, Oscar Uxa invented the first PEZ dispenser. It was primarily invented for sanitary reasons so you could get a piece of candy without touching the others. These original dispensers were also marketed to adults as part of an anti-smoking campaign.

In 1952, PEZ arrived to the United States. They weren’t selling very well so they introduced fruit-flavoured PEZ and created the iconic themed dispensers to attract children. The very first themed dispensers were Santa, robot and space gun. Fun fact: The Santa dispenser is the best selling PEZ dispenser of all time. Now there are loads of different PEZ dispensers and there are even people who collect them. PEZ dispenser collectors are commonly known as PEZheads.
