Guide to Toffee
Share
Toffee is a popular sweet that is mainly consists of white and brown sugar, water and butter. British toffee is however, different from the American version of toffee. American toffee is soft and often covered in chocolate whilst British toffee is hard and breaks easily.
It is uncertain when toffee was first made but toffee rose to popularity in Europe in the early 1800s. The word toffee got into the Oxford dictionary in 1825.
The origins of the word “toffee” are also disputed. Some believe the root of the word is “tafia”, a type of Caribbean rum. Others believe that the word toffee comes from a Creole word meaning “sugar and molasses”. Another belief is that it is named toffee because of its chewy, tough texture and that it was originally spelled “tuffy” or “toughy”.
Although we do not know when toffee was exactly created or where its name came from, we do know that toffee tastes incredible and you should come down to our stores and buy some.
