Guide to Liquorice (Licorice)
Share
Liquorice originated in southern Asia. It then spread to the Middle East, then Europe, then England. It's first known appearance in England was at a monastery in Pontefract.
Liquorice root has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. In fact, people are believed to have been eating liquorice since 2044 B.C. Liquorice has even been eaten by many historic greats such as the Pharaohs, Alexander the Great and Caesar!
Liquorice has many medicinal uses. It has been used for sore throats and liver and kidney issues. During the middle ages, liquorice was eaten to reduce the effects of poorly cooked or contaminated food.
Our favourite use for liquorice however, is in candy. A large variety of sweets can be made due to the fact that Liquorice can either have a salty or sweet taste. In just our store we have liquorice all sorts, Zout, triple salt liquorice, Pontefract cakes and many more liquorice goodies. (Zout is a salty sweet made by mixing ammonium chloride with liquorice).
Liquorice is also used in soft drinks and herbal teas. In its raw form, liquorice can be used as a mouth freshener.
If liquorice is good enough for the greats of history then it sure is good enough for you and me! Come buy liquorice sweets at our stores in Central and Wan Chai.
