Guide to Highland toffees
Share
Highland toffees are one of Scotland’s most beloved sweets of all time. In Scotland, Highland toffees are known as “coo candy” because the wrapper features a Highland cow. Highland toffees were created by the company McCowan's in the 1930s. This is the same company that invented the Wham bar.
The founder, Andrew McCowan, however, wasn’t always in the confectionary business. In fact, before selling toffee he used to deliver lemonade. At that time, his wife used to sell her toffee from the window of their house. When he found out about the popularity of his wife’s toffee, he began to sell toffee on his lemonade delivery trips. Eventually he quit his lemon delivery job and went into selling sweets full time.
McCowan already had a variety of sweets in his store but created toffee chews because of the great depression. He first created toffee chews as penny sweets. They were meant to be small and inexpensive for those who couldn’t afford his other sweets because of the great depression. These toffee chews then became what we now know as Highland toffees.
140 million Highland toffees were sold a year at their peak making them an essential Scottish sweet. Not only are they a must have for Scottish children but they are also a must have for you. So come to our store and buy some Highland toffees.
